WHEELING TUNNEL Wheeling, West Virginia

DSM-DS System

In retrofitting expansion joint leaks in the Wheeling Tunnel on Interstate I-70, the new expansion joints had to be be dual-sided. An abandoned coal mine above the tunnel leaches water down toward the tunnel. At the expansion joints the water hits the outer silicone bellows of the DSM System where it sheds around the outside of the tunnel to drain away. As in most tunnel applications, by necessity, the installation is from the negative side (inside of the tunnel). Dual-sided, DSM-DS was installed in the entire circumference of the tunnel. Pictures below show in-progress and completed negative-side installation and inspection before final replacement tiles were installed. Who else is using DSM and DSM-DS?

In a tunnel lining, installed from the negative side, DSM-DS is protected from the corrosive exhaust environment inside the tunnel while shedding water runs to drains off the back side of the material.
