Sika Emseal’s work at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport dates back to 2005. Since then, its projects have spanned multiple facilities across the airport, including terminals, parking structures, transit-related infrastructure, and the Rental Car Center. A major milestone was the 2009 CONRAC installation, for which more than 10,000 linear feet of expansion joint systems were supplied for the airport’s rental car complex.

North Terminal and CONRAC

Work at the North Terminal in 2013 addressed watertight, fire-rated, and high-movement joint conditions using DSM System, Emshield WFR2, and Seismic Colorseal.

At the CONRAC, SJS was installed during the original 2009 construction and was later supplied for renovation work in 2013 and 2022. It is also being supplied for the current 2026 phase as the airport continues to reinvest in the facility.

South Parking Deck

The South Parking Deck has used SJS across multiple construction phases, from Phase 1, Levels 4 through 7, to Phase 2, Level P3. Seismic Colorseal and Horizontal Colorseal accommodate wall and horizontal-plane transitions throughout the structure.

International Terminal and International Park & Ride

At the International Terminal and its dedicated Park & Ride facility, Emshield WFR3 delivers three-hour fire-rated protection at applicable wall and head-of-wall joints. At Terminal F, Emshield DFR2 addresses fire-rated horizontal joint conditions, while SJS-FR2 combines fire-rated protection with a durable, trafficable surface.

Expansion Joint Systems by Application

Across five major airport facilities and numerous construction phases, Sika Emseal has supplied more than a dozen expansion joint systems designed for distinct structural and performance requirements. SJS and related coverplate systems accommodate large, traffic-bearing structural openings. Seismic Colorseal and Horizontal Colorseal maintain watertight continuity through wall and horizontal-plane transitions. Emshield and Wabo FireFlex systems address fire-rated joint conditions, while specialized Wabo systems address gutters, walls, seismic openings, pans, covers, and architectural transitions.

This range of applications reflects a fundamental reality of airport construction: no single expansion joint system can address every structural interface across a campus of this size and complexity.

Performance in an Active Airport Environment

Hartsfield-Jackson remains the world’s busiest airport by total passenger traffic. Infrastructure work at that scale must be coordinated with the demands of an active, 24-hour transportation hub, including parking decks, rental car facilities, terminal buildings, and baggage-handling areas.

Sika Emseal’s project history at Hartsfield-Jackson dates to 2005 and includes the landmark 2009 CONRAC installation as well as more recent work at the South Parking Deck. Across these projects, the systems supplied share a consistent objective: durable, long-term expansion joint performance in high-volume airport infrastructure.
