Watertight Expansion Joints and Construction Sealants by EMSEAL

Emshield DFR / WFR CE

CE Marked, EN-1366-4 Certified Movement Joint

An EN-1366-4 tested, fire-rated movement joint, Emshield DFR / WFR CE is a silicone-faced movement joint for European and other markets requiring CE marking. Tested by CSTB France and certified by European Technical Assessment (ETA), Emshield DFR / WFR CE provides up to 4-hours of fire resistance, and is a water, air, and smoke seal with 100% movement capability. Other features include thermal insulation, UV stability, and trafficability. In contrast to fire barrier blankets Emshield DFR / WFR CE is installed entirely from above the floor slab and performs without the need for invasive metal anchors or complex field fabricated assemblies. Emshield DFR / WFR CE provides a cost effective, long-term watertight seal.

Emshield DFR / WFR CE combines a factory-applied, low modulus silicone with an open cell polyurethane foam infused with a water-based, fire-retardant, acrylic dispersion. The traffic-grade silicone facing is factory adhered to the infused foam on two sides at a width greater than the maximum anticipated joint extension, and is then cured. When compressed, the silicone facing forms a bellows profile capable of accommodating +/-50% (total 100%) movement from the product’s nominal size. The bellows fold, and unfold during movement virtually free of tensile stresses.

Emshield DFR / WFR CE is supplied precompressed to slightly less than its nominal size for ease of installation. To install sticks, clean the substrate faces, apply supplied epoxy adhesive to the substrates. After removing packing materials insert the Emshield DFR / WFR CE into the joint. After the Emshield DFR / WFR CE has expanded to fill the joint space and is adhered to the substrates, a field-applied silicone corner bead ensures a watertight seal at the substrate interface.

CE Marked, EN-1366-4 Certified Movement Joint

Watertight – Emshield DFR CE and WFR CE are manufactured with tensionless silicone bellows, which when installed with an optional silicone bead on the weather face, maintains a watertight seal in accordance with NF 12154 testing.

Fire Resistance – The fire-retardant-impregnated foam, when properly installed, ensures a 1, 2, 3 or 4-hour fire protection in accordance with EN 1366-4 testing.

Sound Attenuation – Emshield DFR CE and WFR CE minimize sound transfer which often occurs at the expansion gap.
The Rs.w (C ; Ctr) : is greater than or equal to 54 (-1 ; -3) in accordance with NF EN 10140-2 (2013) and NF EN 12999-1 (2014)

Non-Invasive Anchoring – There are no hard metal-to-substrate connections with either Emshield DFR CE or WFR CE. The systems are fastened to the joint faces by means of the 1) backpressure of the foam, 2) the epoxy adhesive, and 3) the injected sealant bands at the joint face.

For joints from 12mm (1/2-inch) up to 100mm (4-inch)

+50% and -50% (total 100%) of nominal material size joint movement in accordance with ASTM E1399, UL 2079 and EN 1366-4.

The silicone faces of Emshield DFR CE and WFR CE can be manufactured in a variety of different colors to blend with their adjacent surfaces. They are available in a complete line of Dow 790, Pecora 890 and Dow 748 industry standard colors.

Emshield WFR CE is designed to be used in movement joints in exterior and interior walls where a combination of watertightness, fire-rating, sound attenuation, and thermal-efficiency are required. Emshield DFR CE is used in floors and decks. In deck and roadway usage it can be manufactured with a traffic-grade silicone surface and can be used alone or under any other movement joint cover, plate or filler where depth of substrate allows.

IMPORTANT: This instruction-summary is generic. Refer to Install Data and, if applicable, to job-specific instructions of an EMSEAL technician.

  • Store at room temperature. Expansion is quicker when warm, slower when cold.
Ensure nominal size of material matches joint size adjusted from mean temperature.
  • Mix the construction-grade epoxy and apply to clean and primed substrate faces.
Remove shrink-wrap packaging and hardboard. Wipe factory applied release agent off silicone facing using damp, clean, lint free rag.
  • Insert material into joint with at least a 1/4” (6mm) recess.
  • Allow material to expand against other joint face. Wedge larger sizes in place while it expands.
  • Apply thin bead of silicone sealant along edge of bellows at end where the material will join with next length.
  • Apply and spread a layer of supplied intumescent sealant to the exposed foam end surfaces.
  • Leave ends of sticks to be joined touching and protruding from the joint. Push remaining material into the joint then go back and press the protruding joins into the joint.
  • At surface joins blend silicone into the silicone bellows to create a consistent finished appearance being sure not to restrict the folds of the bellows.
  • Once material has expanded across the joint, gun and tool fillet bead of supplied liquid silicone at the substrate-to-bellows join.
