Basis of Design: BACKERSEAL by EMSEAL Joint Systems for secondary seal to field-applied liquid sealants (by others) in vertical-plane walls (above-grade). Typical locations include, but are not limited to the following: applications in window perimeters, other façade penetrations such as doors, store fronts, vents, HVAC units etc, panel to panel joints, curtain walls, control joints, between dissimilar materials, and new-to-existing connections. Seal shall be comprised of water-based, 100% acrylic, impregnated expanding foam sealant with (in sizes where applicable as determined by manufacturer) internal laminations of closed cell (EVA) foam. Alternates containing wax or wax compounds shall not be permitted. Material to be supplied in sticks or rolls, precompressed to less than joint size at mean temperature for ease of installation. Material will contain pressure-sensitive mounting adhesive on one side of the material to aide installation. All substitute candidates to be certified in writing to be free in composition of any waxes or asphalts, wax compounds or asphalt compounds. All substitute candidates shall be certified in writing to be: a) capable of withstanding 150°F (65°C) for 3 hours while compressed down to the minimum of movement capability dimension of the basis of design product (-25% of nominal material size) without evidence of any bleeding of impregnation medium from the material; and b) that the same material after the heat stability test will self-expand to the maximum of movement capability dimension of the basis-of-design product (+25% of nominal material size) within 24 hours at room temperature 68°F (20°C). ****SPECIFIER: CHOOSE one of the following configurations to suit your preference or allow the use of either.**** BACKERSEAL to be installed recessed from substrate faces and to receive a field-applied coating of low-modulus liquid sealant (by others) not to exceed ¼-inch, (6 mm) thick. Material to be installed at depth sufficient to allow installation of properly sized backer rod and liquid sealant (by others) in front of BACKERSEAL. ***END OF GUIDE SPECIFICATION*** |
