A hinged expansion joint cover plate, Wabo®SafetyFlex (SFP) is ideal for pedestrian walkway areas as well as in low-speed vehicular traffic areas in parking garages. Loading-bearing, independent metal plates integral to the molded EPDM rubber cover allows the system to flex in response to changes in vertical displacement between opposing slabs. Used in both recessed and surface mount applications.

The design of the system reduces potential tripping hazards by providing a smooth, slip resistant transition over expansion joint openings. Independent metal plates integral to the rubber cover allows the system to flex in response to changes in vertical displacement between opposing slabs (SFP-1200 or larger). In addition, the use of metal plates provides load carrying capability across the joint opening and can be used in low-speed vehicular traffic areas. The rubber cover also reduces the sound caused by vehicular traffic as they travel across the expansion joint opening.

Optional self-levelling Emcrete elastomeric nosing system is used to fill the mounting blockouts to create a level, sound dampened, and strengthened joint edge.

For a secondary watertight system, DSM can be installed below SafetyFlex – Consult Sika Emseal for available sizes.

Specify Emshield® DFR for the added life safety assurance of built-in UL 2079 fire rating and water infiltration – Consult Sika Emseal for available sizes.

Usos

Features Explained

Hinged Design – The independent metal plates integral to the molded rubber cover allows the system to flex in response to changes in vertical displacement between opposing slabs.

Sound Dampened – Rubber encapsulated metal plates eliminates trafficable noise when traversing the coverplate. Integrated with Emseal-supplied elastomeric nosing material Emcrete, enhances the sound reduction.

Slip-Resistant – Combination of the rubber coating and smooth rolling surface make this coverplate system ideal for pedestrian traffic and rolling carts/vehicles.

Watertight – When used in conjunction with Sika Emseal’s DSM System, a trafficable, watertight system is achieved.

Fire-Rated – When used in conjunction with Sika Emseal’s Emshield® DFR2 or DFR3 systems, a 2-hour and 3-hour fire-rated system can be achieved.

Durability – The molded rubber cover encapsulates the metal plates protecting the material from deterioration.

Easy Installation – Lap-joint connectors allow for easy transitions between panels.

 

 

Composition

Wabo®SafetyFlex is a elastomeric rubber encapsulated, steel cover plate system.

The load-bearing, metal plates are segmented to provide a hinged design giving the product the ability to flex in vertical displacement and deflection of the deck/floor.

The factory-assembled encapsulated rubber coating provides a slip-resistant surface for pedestrian traffic.

Design Considerations

  • Wabo®SafetyFlex can be installed in several ways as selected by the designer or owner:
    • Surface mounted on top of concrete deck (no recess, no blockout).
    • Surface mounted on top of Emseal elastomeric nosing material in blockouts on each side of the joint.
    • Recessed on top of Emcrete elastomeric nosing material in blockouts on each side of the joint.’
  • Substrates must have the ability to withstand the insertion of the mounting anchors.

Maintenance

  • As with any construction product, the useful life of the material can be maximized with routine inspection and repair if required.
  • Clearing of surface debris and inspection will reveal any damage to the product or adjacent substrates that might affect building performance.
  • Repair, if necessary of the system can be accomplished by removing the cover plates and replacing only damaged sections. Consult Sika Emseal to discuss specific conditions.
