Definition

What is a structural expansion joint?

A mid-structure separation designed to relieve stress on building materials caused by building movement induced by:

  • seismic events,
  • thermal expansion and contraction caused by climatic changes,
  • sway caused by wind, etc.

Because the structural joint bisects the entire structure, it marks a gap through all building assemblies.  This gap must be filled to restore the waterproofing, fire proofing, sound proofing, trafficable surface etc. functions of the adjacent building elements.

Expansion joint systems are used to bridge the gap.
