SJS-SEISMIC JOINT SYSTEM Project Portfolio

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport CONRAC Rental Car Center Parking Facility--2009 New Construction
Parking deck expansion joints on massive CONRAC parking facility decks are EMSEAL Seismic Joint System--SJS--From EMSEAL is system of choice for CONRAC parking facility. Seismic joint system from EMSEAL is watertight, quiet, non-invasively anchored.
Consolidated Rental Car Agency Center (CONRAC) or Consolidated Rental Car Parking Facility (CRCF)--no matter what you call them, these massive parking facilities are the trend for all major airports.

They have also long been a specialty of EMSEAL's in terms of sealing the expansion joints designed into these massive decks to accommodate structural movements. In 2003, BWI's 22-acre CRCF opened with THERMAFLEX by EMSEAL as the parking deck expansion joint of choice.

In 2009, the sealing of 10,000 LF of joint at the CONRAC at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in was similarly entrusted to EMSEAL and feature multiple systems from EMSEAL's comprehenisve product range for parking decks, walls, and floors.

SJS SYSTEM, THERMAFLEX, DSM SYSTEM, HORIZONTAL COLORSEAL, MIGUTRANS FS 160, and SEISMIC COLORSEAL were all utilized where they suited respective applications.

Morris Crossroads Corporate Center, Mount Olive, NJ--2007 Retrofit

Hundreds of feet of deck expansion joint at the vast parking facility of this corporate center was replaced using the Seismic Joint System-SJS from EMSEAL.  Installed over a grey elastomeric nosing material (above left) supplied by EMSEAL, the system  is quiet, watertight, and handles the thermal cycling induced by temperature changes acting on vast concrete slabs on each side of the joints.  Nearly three years after installation the system remains unchanged (above center). The factory fabricated transitions over curbs and into parapets, as well as the field-fabricated transitions over the parapets in the SEISMIC COLORSEAL remain watertight ensuring continuity of seal.

Boston, MA--The Shops at Prudential Center is one the hubs of downtown retail, shopping, office and convention activity.  It's vast underground parking decks and loading docks are serviced from adjacent roadways through entrances and exits off street level.   The history of expansion joint technology is on display at various locations around this 3.2 million square foot mixed-use development.  In one location, the breakthrough innovations of the SJS SYSTEM from EMSEAL is quietly, unobtrusively doing its intended duty.

Since its installation, the SJS SYSTEMS has been maintenance free.  It features aluminum coverplates (stainless steel is an option), with an ADA compliant coefficient of friction, this SJS SYSTEM is watertight, quiet, traffic durable, non-invasively anchored and aesthetically coordinated.

Scott Stadium has been undergoing a steady program of upgrade that includes retrofitting failed and leaking expansion joints.  The custom-tailored solution takes into account the locations, traffic, movement, and existing joint sizes at each expansion joint location.  Consequently systems from EMSEAL's entire selection of stadium expansion joints have been utilized where they are best suited.  SEISMIC JOINT SYSTEM-SJS is the latest to be installed and was chose where existing joints were too large for a winged-compression seal system like THERMAFLEX that was used elsewhere on the project.

The picture above left illustrates the unique ability of SJS to ensure continuity of seal in plane changes. The view is looking down over the railing at the transition between the upper and lower seating bowls.  It shows how the expansion joint system has been supplied and installed to be watertight throughout this transition.

Above right is a view looking down the completed installation of the SJS SYSTEM in the seating bowl.  The sandblasted coverplates are skid resistant and feature a long chamfer on its edges to facilitate pedestrian traffic.  Other EMSEAL systems used on the project include double-sided SEISMIC COLORSEAL, DSM SYSTEM, SEISMIC COLORSEAL and THERMAFLEX with hundreds of factory-fabricated inside and outside transitions to follow the treads and risers.

After a winged seal had failed in extension due to post-tension shortening of the slabs adjacent to the deck, a watertight solution for the large resulting structural joint opening was needed.   The old system was removed leaving 3/4" deep blockouts on each side of the opening.  The blockouts were filled with EMSEAL's flexible, impact and sound absorbing nosing material and SJS SYSTEM was installed into the joint gap.  The result is a watertight cover plate system that is quiet and free of any mechanical fastenings, embeds, or anchors into the concrete.

In this high traffic mall, the original winged compression seal failed due to unanticipated post tension shortening.  It was then subsequently covered over with a rubber-encased coverplate whose expansion anchors had vibrated loose causing a hazard.

Without closing down the deck, by diverting traffic over half of the joint at a time, the failed systems were replaced with the EMSEAL SJS SYSTEM in under 4 hours.  Because SJS installs without the need for embeds, anchors, or any invasive anchoring into the concrete, all concerns about hitting the post tension tendons were eliminated.

The result is a traffic-durable joint system that is watertight--not water managed.  Systems that rely on looped gutters under coverplates leave owners with the problem of managing any collected water into drains or elsewhere.
